Our Tips & Tricks for Landing a Role 📝

  1. Use your resources! Visit your university/department's career center and seek their help. They likely offer help with resume writing, interview preparation, and more. When thinking about your resume, make sure your anticipated graduation date is easy to find. That is the first thing we look for to help us see where you would fit into our internship program. You should highlight relevant coursework for your major (not general education classes), and any prior work experience.

  2. Gain practical experience! For structural engineering, construction experience can be just as valuable as an internship - especially for the summers after your freshman and sophomore years. Get involved in engineering related clubs, competitions, or personal projects - and be an active participant. If you put it on your resume, be ready to talk about what you contributed to the organization/project.

  3. Be persistent and positive! Landing an internship or that first job out of school can be challenging, but persistence pays off. Stay positive, learn from rejections, and keep applying. At Apex, we look for students with at least Junior level major-related coursework completed. Every year, we talk to hundreds of freshmen and sophomores, who just aren't there yet. A rejection isn't any reflection on you - it's more of a reflection on the company knowing the specific needs of the position and the credentials that previous successful candidates brought to the table.

Your Future at Apex 🚀

Post-Internship Opportunities: At Apex, there's always the potential for your internship to turn into a full-time position, with plenty of growth opportunities within our firm. Fun fact: 37.5% of our current owners (3 out of 8) started as interns at Apex!

Hands-On Experience: You'll work on real projects from start to finish - not just one aspect of a project.

Diverse Project Portfolio: There's no design-and-repeat... and repeat... and repeat... and then repeat again... here! You'll work on a variety of project types, construction materials, and locations (i.e. different codes).

Collaborative Team Structure: You'll work closely with your project manager (always a licensed PE/SE) within a pod of 5-6 engineers and one design tech.

Support for Your Future:

  • Tuition Reimbursement: We offer financial support for further education.

  • PE/SE Exam Support: We provide resources and financial assistance to help you prepare for your licensure exams. We even have study groups!
